"When my own children were growing up, we would hike and picnic up in the Sand Hills. As a teacher, my natural curiosity drove me to learn more about the history of the area. I love sharing what I have learned over the years with kids. It's really fun helping them learn about my back yard."

Bob Thorson

Who is Bob Thorson?

Bob Thorson has been helping to lead environmental education activities at the Agassiz ELC since retiring from teaching in 2007.  He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education, in addition to many graduate credits.

Bob grew up in Nielsville, MN where his mom was an elementary school teacher.  He graduated from Halstad high school, and went on to college in Moorhead. He settled in Fertile, where he raised his family and taught elementary school for 41 years, in 4th and 5th grade classrooms, specializing in natural science and math. While teaching, Bob would often bring students out to the Sand Hills area to go skiing or sledding, and to explore the area. He used the learning environment of the Sand Hills to teach his students about Glacial Lake Agassiz. His years of experience and wide range of knowledge make him very engaging to young students.
