“What’s News?”
at the AELC

Four-wheelers are fun. I know they are. My sister’s boyfriend takes turns giving rides on his every time they come to visit. They look cool. They go fast. You don’t even need a driver’s license to drive one. So why don’t we allow them on the trails of the Agassiz Environmental Learning Center?
I’ve had a lot of people ask me that same question. “Jacque, now that you’re office manager you should allow ATV’s.” I’ve even been told about how I could really make the AELC “serious” money if we open up the trails to ATV’s. So, in today’s article I am going to try to answer everyone’s question.
The Agassiz Environmental Learning Center prides itself on our hands-on learning programs directed at school groups. We try to preserve as much of our natural surroundings as possible. Even our Botanical Garden is comprised of grasses and flowers native to Minnesota.
Our members are welcome to come out here and hike, horseback ride, or camp. I’ve even seen a couple of canoes and a few bicyclers come through. In the winter we have cross-country skiing and snowmobiles trails set up.
A four-wheeler is fun, but it will do serious damage. It will tear up the land and will never look the same again. The Fertile Sand Hills would be ruined. If we let people make and use trails there is no guarantee that everyone will stay on those designed trails.
Snowmobiles have snow and ice as a cushion protecting the land. However, we do have designated trails where snowmobiles are and are not allowed.
The Agassiz Environmental Learning Center has signs at the beginning of every trial that say “No ATV”. There are also picture signs saying what each trail is designed for. So if someone is riding a four-wheeler out here, then we know that they are just not following our rules.
I know that some of you disagree with this decision, but that’s ok. You’re allowed to disagree, that’s what makes America so great. However, it is the decision of the board members to continue to not allow four-wheelers or golf carts onto the AELC area in order to preserve the natural wilderness.
I have also been informed by the board members that I am to begin involving law enforcement. If I hear or see an ATV I am to report it to the local authorities. They will investigate the matter and the offender will be fined. So please follow the AELC rules and help us preserve the area for future generations. Thank you.
To schedule an event such as birthdays, weddings, or graduation or learn more about the Agassiz Environmental Learning Center call Jacque in the office at 218-945-3129 or e-mail aelc@gvtel.com  Also, make sure you check out our website at www.aelcfertile.org
